Background

My name is Betty Herzog.  I would like to tell you a little bit about my background and some of my experiences that have contributed to my passion for helping individuals learn to read.

My hands on tutoring experience began with one of my children.  He was bright and inquisitive, and also severely dyslexic.  I researched many educational approaches and experimented with a variety of strategies to find out what would work best for his unique learning style.  Through this research, I met Dianne Craft, MA, CNHP in Littleton Colorado,.  She uses Brain Integration Therapy and Right Brain Training Strategies, which proved to be very effective in helping him retain phonetic sounds, decode words, and gain fluency and comprehension.  Mrs. Craft is recognized for her expertise in diagnosing learning difficulties and developing personalized plans for the specific needs of each individual.  She trained me to help my son, and the experiment produced results beyond my expectations.  He is now a successful and confident young businessman working in real estate.

In 2012, I was trained in the Barton Reading Program, which is based on the Orton-Gillingham method.   Both of these programs have a multi-sensory approach and help students make connections between sounds and words.   The Barton program is particularly good for students who have difficulty with spelling.  It is a one-on-one tutoring program that takes the guesswork out of reading and spelling.

In addition, I have training and experience using the Lindamood-Bell Program (LIPS).  This program complements Barton for students who have auditory processing disorder.

This field of study is growing rapidly as we learn more about how the brain functions and how it relates to learning.  I am committed to ongoing professional development as new programs are created to assist in this important line of research.

I have eleven years of formal teaching experience and sixteen years of home schooling.   I am a caring and compassionate teacher and value having a respectful connection with my students.  My non-stressful approach is based on encouragement and filled with warmth and humor. My years of experience tutoring with dyslexia and learning disabilities have  taught me that with appropriate instruction, patience, and dedication, children and adults can move toward overcoming their learning challenges.
